Demand an investigation

into illegal cuffing during childbirth

Shocking reports have emerged of pregnant women being handcuffed to male officers during childbirth at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey. One woman who was cuffed to an officer for 48 hours says “I feel I was treated as less than an animal.”

This is unlawful and a human rights violation.

The women are demanding an independent investigation into why this was allowed to happen to them – they want accountability and justice. So far, the Ministry of Justice has ignored them.

Please show your support by writing to the Secretary of State for Justice, Shabana Mahmood, and Director of HMPPS Amy Rees, to support their calls for an independent investigation into unlawful use of restraints.

Until we totally end the imprisonment of pregnant women and mothers, the most valuable action you can take is to amplify the voices,  experiences and demands of women who have experienced pregnancy in prison.
